Metalworking: Compass Shaped Picture Frame

I've been introduced to metalworking in my Beginning Crafts class at Cal State Fullerton. My assignment was to create a photo frame with an image suspended in plexiglass.

I chose a photo of me and a few of my best friends on my 21st birthday, taken in front of Disney's California Adventure while standing on the enormous compass.

Compasses hold special significance for me: where am I now, where am I headed, etc.

Each piece of metal was cut from a sheet using a hand saw, then sanded to create safe touchable edges. The piece was assembled and fixed using copper rivets. All gold colored pieces are brass while the orange pieces are copper.

It will be interesting to watch the metal gain a natural patina over time!
